Southwire Hosts Back to School Giveaway

Jul 10, 2019

Southwire’s Project GIFT® is helping thousands of students get ready for the new school year at the 15th Annual Back to School Giveaway. The company’s employee-driven non-profit, Project GIFT, will distribute thousands of bags of supplies to students K-12 in Downtown Carrollton at Adamson Square from 9 AM until 1 PM this Saturday, July 13.

“We are so excited to partner with some incredible sponsors and organizations for this year’s community Back to School,” said Kersha Cartwright, Southwire’s Project GIFT coordinator. “Moving to Adamson Square emphasizes the importance of joining together to support education and the addition of so many resources this year will provide even more for the boys and girls in this community.”

The bags of supplies are divided into two groups based on grade level – kindergarten through third grade and fourth through 12th grades. More than 5,000 bags of supplies will be given out over the course of the day on the square in Carrollton. As part of Project GIFT’s commitment to education, more than 25,000 bags will be given out companywide.

“The most rewarding part of Back to School volunteering is meeting the amazing young people that we serve,” said Wendy Lucio, Project GIFT volunteer. “To see the excitement on the faces of the kids is the best part.”

In addition to receiving free school supplies, students may participate in a wide variety of additional offerings at the Back to School giveaway including dental and nutritional education, eye screenings, fingerprinting, fitness activities, ticket giveaways and more throughout the day. Many local churches have partnered to create the first ever Back to School Clothes Closet that will offer gently used clothing for students, as well as new socks and underwear.

This year’s Back to School will also provide a day packed with entertainment from the Carrollton AMP. Representatives from Carroll County Schools, Carrollton City Schools, pet organizations, Cutman Boxing and local dance troupes will provide entertainment from 9 am until 1 pm.
