The unit is 2.5 years old but I have only used it 2 or 3 times since the purchase. My job occasionally requires me to work on phone and data circuits and I purchased the "butt set" and a data line tester at the same time for a specific job and have rarely needed them since. It was stored in a tool box inside one of the lockable equipment/tool cabinets in my employer's service van. Today I pulled out the "butt set" to test dial tone at the service provider's NID (I am wiring the circuit to autodial alarm unit) and at first thought the circuit was bad. After some testing, I have determined that the test set is bad. It will seize the line and hang up on the operation of the "talk" switch." The polarity tester is functioning. It will busy the circuit out in the talk position (busy signal to incoming calls). But I can neither hear nor be heard with the handset and the dial pad does not function. I did replace the 2032 3V battery that was dead but that did not help.
There is that telltale electronic burn smell on the circuit board and I found sound dark discoloration on the circuit board next to R6. I am guessing that is the problem.

What is the warranty for a B600 telephone test set? I bought a couple of these at Alarmax Pittsburgh over the past couple of years. One of them will not generate any tone. The other does not give any sound from the speaker.

Although I can hear dial tone, the unit is not generating dtmf tones. This is a new unit. Does that function require batteries?

The B600 only requires batteries, when storing phone numbers to memory. The use of DTMF does not require batteries.
