On December 6, 1907, 362 miners were killed in the worst mining accident in America's history. An explosion spread through the mines of Monogah, West Virginia, which led to an instantaneous cave-in. Over a century later in 2009, December 6 was designated as National Miners Day to be a day of reflection, appreciation, and commemoration to honor the contributions of the men and women who work in the mining industry. While safety measures, techniques, and equipment have improved significantly since the tragedy in Monogah, West Virginia, mining is still one of the most dangerous jobs in America. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) released statistics from 1977 to 2015 that show a decline in overall accidents and fatalities across the United States, but danger is still present. To help mitigate the risks for miners and others involved in the mining industry, Southwire manufactures safe and durable mining cable. Our dedicated product engineers understand the special requirements needed for cable used in the harshest of industrial and mining environments. Our mining cable has been manufactured and tested to meet or exceed industry standards such as UL, CSA, MSHA, and OSHA. Our products also meet approval of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The RHINO® Brand mining cable with mold cured jackets is the latest product group that reflects this commitment.
“The contributions of miners are felt across the world every day. Copper, Aluminum and other materials that Southwire utilizes to manufacture its wire and cable comes from this dedication and hard work," stated Chris Marlow, Southwire's VP, Sales - Mining. "We would like to take this opportunity to say “thank you!” Southwire is also committed to help mitigate the risks that miners face in an industry where safety and productivity is paramount.
