Stringent hygiene regulations required in food processing environments extend to the cords, cables and electrical components that power your operations. Production equipment, as well as the necessary cables, components, and accessories, must remain reliable and consistent throughout diverse mechanical, chemical, humidity, and temperature conditions. Southwire food-grade cables are built to endure demanding cleaning procedures of regulated spaces of food and beverage manufacturing or life science applications. Southwire cables exceed Ecolab PM-40-1 Material Resistance Test with 30-day exposure, UL Verified V747862 for Zones 2, 3, and 4.

Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

The FSMA outlines preventive controls to ensure safe and secure food and beverage manufacturing with measures focused on inspection and compliance, imported food safety, response expectations and enhanced partnerships. The guidelines also define zone for four application areas that require cable, connector and cord solutions:

ZONE 1 - Contact

  • Regular contact with food
  • Highest probability of product contamination
  • Frequent intense cleaning
  • Cables/connectors often used for sensing and actuation

ZONE 2 - Splash

  • Surrounds food production
  • Drips/spills, runoff pools will cause product contamination
  • Frequent intense cleaning
  • Power and control cables, trays, drop cords used on modular/pluggable equipment

ZONE 3 - Adjacent

  • Less contact
  • Often cleaned simultaneously with Z2
  • Exposed cables still need to withstand chemicals and moisture stress

ZONE 4 - Distant

  • Areas outside of Zone 3 with no direct relation to food areas
