Southwire is pleased to announce that eight of its facilities received a 2021 Safety Performance Contest Award from the Georgia Association of Manufacturers (GAM).

The company’s recipients include its 12 for Life facility in Carrollton, Ga.; Building Wire, Douglas, Metal Clad (MC) Cable and Villa Rica Plants; and Energy, Retail East and West Georgia Customer Service Centers (CSCs).

“To be recognized for our safety efforts from GAM is a testament to the efforts our plants and facilities put forth daily in maintaining a safe workplace, taking responsibility for their work environments and doing the right thing every time, even during challenging and unprecedented times,” said LaKisha Wilson, vice president of environmental, health and safety (EHS) and security. “As part of Southwire's commitment to safety in the workplace, we also focus on environmental, health and security, and we strive to uphold these facets of safety each and every day, working to ensure that our employees return home from work just as they arrived."

According to its website, GAM is the statewide trade association that represents all of Georgia's manufacturing businesses in legislative, regulatory and public relations matters.  Founded in 1900, GAM also provides seminars, services and guidance to manufacturers on a variety of issues, including but not limited to human resources, workforce development, public utility rates and energy, safety and health, employee benefits, environmental quality and taxation.

“Receiving this recognition from GAM shows that Southwire continues to lead in the area of safety, and it is a testament of the employee engagement, leadership and passion for process improvement that we see in our facilities,” said Nilesh Sivaramakrishnan, senior vice president of EHS, lean, quality and process engineering. “We are truly committed to keeping our employees safe, and it is great to see that we are doing very well compared to our peers in the industry.”

To be eligible for the award, facilities are required to have a recordable injury rate below 3.1 – the most recently confirmed average for manufacturing – and finish 2021 without a lost time accident or disabling injury.

“The safety records that our sites have achieved did not happen by chance. They were achieved by constantly evaluating opportunities for improvement while also engaging and empowering our teams,” said Greg McKibben, director of EHS. “These awards are further recognition of our sites’ efforts to proactively create a safe work environment for our employees.”

Jamie Wainscott, director of EHS manufacturing, says that the award showcases the facilities’ efforts to prioritize the health and safety of their employees.

“Safety is a core value within the Southwire culture, and our facilities continue to find new and creative ways to engage our employees. This award and our results are a testament to the effort and dedication of our teams,” said Wainscott. “They have continued to lead with a passion for safety, and we look forward to what they will achieve in 2022.”
