May 19, 2016

The annual IEEE Power & Energy Society Substation Annual Committee meeting will be held on May 22-26 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel in Atlanta and will be co-hosted by Southwire Company, LLC and Southern Company. More than 150 professionals representing utilities, consulting firms and manufacturers from across the United States and other nations are scheduled to be in attendance.

“The annual event is a working meeting focused on the development of IEEE standards, which impact engineering practices in the power industry,” said Brett Kenerly, IEEE PES Substations Committee member and Southwire Substation Product Manager. “We are looking forward to the development of industry standards that guide the design and construction of power equipment and systems.”

The meeting is open to all and provides attendees with the unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and expertise by participating in activities of their Substations Committee and numerous working groups and task forces.

Southwire representatives Mark Lancaster, Director of Intelligent Grid & Energy Solutions and Rebecca Cranford, Senior Vice President Sustainability, EHS & Quality, will each deliver a keynote address. Mr. Lancaster’s address is entitled: Intelligent Grid of the Future. More information on Southwire’s Intelligent Grid Solutions can be found at http://intelligentgrid.southwire.com/.

Ms. Cranford will present: Impact of Sustainability. More information on Southwire’s sustainability efforts can be found at www.southwire.com/sustainability.

Tutorials that will be presented include:

  • IEEE Standard 980 – Guide for Oil Containment Systems
  • Cigre Tutorial – Air Insulated Substation Design for Severe Climate Conditions
  • Cigre Tutorial – SF6 - Application in the Electric Power Industry, and Responsible Use of SF6 - Challenges and Options
  • IEEE Standard 1264 – Substation Animal Deterrents
  • Several additional meetings are also scheduled throughout the event.

The annual meeting will feature two “Tech Tours” for attendees to take part in, one at the Southwire Energy Center on Monday and one at the Georgia Power Customer Resource Center on Tuesday.

The Southwire Energy Center is designed to be the preeminent manufacturing facility of substation cables and specialty cable products for intelligent grid systems and renewable power. Not just a manufacturing facility, the Energy Center is so much more. After the dramatic lobby experience, the tour will introduce you to Southwire’s state-of-the-art manufacturing floor, highlighting the production process for control cables — from phase insulation to cabling, shielding and on through to jacketing. You’ll also get a glimpse of our comprehensive quality procedures, including in-line inspections, off-line inspections, and a visit to our QA lab. The tour will conclude in the center’s Observatory, with its panoramic overlook of the plant floor. Here, we’ll reveal some of our latest innovations and give you a peek at those still in development.
