Here are some important updates on Southwire's SAG10®, the industry standard software for calculating sag and tension in overhead conductors.

Be aware of 2012 NESC loading table changes

The 2012 NESC revises the applicable temperatures for tension limits for the Light, Medium, and Heavy loading tables. The revisions yield more conservative calculations, with the goal of reducing Aeolian vibration. If your line design already includes vibration protection, most cases will require no loading table changes.

For line designs with no dampers and no record of an engineering analysis indicating no likelihood for Aeolian vibration damage, engineers can show NESC compliance by changing the temperatures where tension limits are set in the default NESC loading tables in SAG10®. More background on the 2012 NESC changes concerning SAG10® and revised SAG10® NESC load tables are also available from Southwire at http://www.sag10.com.

Minor discrepancy for twisted pair cables require correction

The latest patch of SAG10®, SAG10® v3.10.10, introduces a minor discrepancy for calculations involving twisted pair (TP) conductors. This bug has also been found in v3.10.6. The sag difference is only a few inches, but for best accuracy perform TP conductor calculations for all versions of SAG10® with the following routine:

a. Select the appropriate single conductor from the Conductor Type list in the Conductor Selection menu
b. Instead of choosing the TP radio button in Conductor Options, click Edit Data
c. Edit the conductor name by adding "/TP" to the code word
d. Multiply the following parameters by two (2) 
            i. Area 
            ii. Weight 
            iii. RBS 
            iv. kcmil area
e. Multiply the diameter by 1.6366
f.  Keep the stress-strain chart number and stranding the same
g. Click Accept or Save to Custom

SAG10® v4.0 is on the way

SAG10® v4.0 is currently in development. This version will be fully compatible with Windows 7. Southwire will keep SAG10® users informed on the release of this new version.
