Southwire Support Speeds Major Fire Recovery

When a blazing wildfire devastated a huge area near Los Angeles, Southwire's response helped restore power.
When the Station Fire roared across the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles in the fall of 2009, it destroyed electrical infrastructure in over 250 square miles.

Southern California Edison (SCE) needed transmission and distribution conductors quickly to restore power to an area blighted by the largest wildfire in the history of Los Angeles County. Southwire delivered.

Product arrived in days
Southwire shipped over 1.1 million feet of wire and cable to SCE to rebuild after the Station Fire. "That's an impressive number, but the really impressive part is that the vast majority of it was delivered within three days of the first calls for help," says Lee Peeples, vice president of sales for the Western Division of Southwire's Energy Division.

The inventory in Southwire's network of Service Centers was the key to Southwire's ability to respond. Much of wire came right out of Service Center stock. Products that weren't in stock were moved directly to the top of the Southwire manufacturing queue and were delivered within two weeks.

Cooperation in logistics speeded installation
Getting that much wire to the installation crews was no small task. Southwire's agent Young & Company, providing local representation in southern California, worked closely with SCE to gain precious time. SCE set up emergency staging centers where they were needed, and in many cases Southwire delivered directly to those staging centers.

The combination of a major electrical utility working with Southwire as a strategic supplier produced an unparalleled emergency recovery effort, demonstrating the power of business alliances.
