Four-layer Trap Wire Expands High-Capacity Overhead Options

Customer requests spur enhanced energy capabilities in Southwire’s overhead conductor line

If you’re designing new high-capacity overhead transmission lines or upgrading existing ones, you have a new range of options from Southwire.

“Customers have been requesting larger conductors for new lines and in re-conductoring projects. They can now come to Southwire for overhead conductors with up to four layers of trapezoidal stranding (trap wire). The new four-layer options extend the size range of trap wire conductors to 3,000 kcmil and beyond,” says Stephen Spruell, product development manager for Southwire’s Energy Division.

Customers can get Southwire four-layer trap wire in aluminum-conductor steel-supported (ACSS), aluminum-conductor steel-reinforced (ACSR) and all-aluminum conductor (AAC) constructions. This expansion of trap wire products makes it even easier for Southwire to be your one-stop shop for high-capacity transmission line components and support.

“Southwire four-layer trap wire options are built on Southwire’s decades of experience with trap wire constructions,” says Spruell. “This further extends the breadth of the Southwire commitment to a product line that meets customer needs.”

Southwire has already manufactured four-layer trap wire conductors in 2,627.3 kcmil (type 8) Santee/ACSS/HS/TW and 2,153.8 kcmil (type 8) Powder/ACSS/HS/TW sizes. Southwire also has designs for sizes exceeding 3000 kcmil and can provide any common industry size as well as custom designs upon request.

Southwire four-layer trap wire conductors are available with the same standard delivery times as smaller conductors, and all conductors meet or exceed all applicable ASTM and Aluminum Association standards.

What is trapezoidal stranding?

Standard round-wire conductor architectures leave air gaps between strands. Trap wire architecture forms each of the conductor strands into a close-fitting conductor cross section that minimizes air gaps, thereby maximizing aluminum conductor area for a given diameter.

Trap wire reduces conductor diameter by about 10 percent for any given kcmil size. Or, for a given diameter, you can get 20 to 25 percent more aluminum cross-sectional area. Trap wire conductors have increased resistance to Aeolian vibration and improved fatigue resistance. The smaller diameter of trap wire also reduces structural loads due to ice and wind.
