In order to be sustainable, Southwire must be profitable. Without sustained financial success, we cannot achieve our other goals of Growing Green, Living Well, Giving Back and Doing Right. The continuing economic recession has only magnified the importance of sustainable business development. In past years, Southwire’s core business has been tied to the construction sector. With continued record lows for new construction starts, we needed to redefine our business to some extent.
In 2010, Southwire acquired American Insulated Wire (AIW) and Tappan Wire & Cable, which served to expand our product lines and improve our ability to meet customer needs. These acquisitions have allowed Southwire to become stronger in construction, industrial, OEM, retail, renewable energy, telecommunications, electronics, and portable cord products. Diversifying our business has added to Southwire’s ability to offer differentiated, custom products that provide value-added benefits to end users. Southwire continues its commitment to provide industry-leading service for our customers by offering the broadest range of wire and cable products available from one manufacturer.
On the negative side, reduced demand for building wire products forced us to close our manufacturing operations at some locations. Although closing plants and eliminating jobs is painful, particularly for those individuals and families affected, these moves were critical for Southwire’s sustained future going forward.
In spite of the challenges, Southwire has remained profitable. By continuing to meet stakeholder expectations, even in this trying economic environment, Southwire has been able to Build Worth. We continue to strive to maintain our superior reputation for product innovation, process quality, customer service and competitive pricing. By building trust with our customers and suppliers and investing in our products, processes and people, we will continue Building Worth and achieve a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Looking ahead, we want to continue our pursuit of sustainability and maintain our success. By partnering with our suppliers and customers, we can learn from, challenge, and support each other as we all strive for a sustainable business future. Southwire continues to invest in research and development of new products that will better serve the needs of our customers. At the same time, we must evaluate how these products impact the limited resources our planet has to offer as we consider the needs of the present and future generations.
