At Southwire, we continually explore ways to ensure our company remains sustainable for generations to come. That means making the best use of resources, ensuring we protect the natural environment and providing full support to our various stakeholders, including our employees, suppliers, customers and communities. By doing so, we remain a healthy and profitable company.
OUR EMPLOYEES
SAFETY
Our employees are our most precious resource. Ensuring each of us remains safe and healthy is critical to our success. To do so, we continue to build on our industry-leading performance by setting tough safety goals. We maintain a close relationship with the Occupation Safety and Health Administration, including the creation of OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs at our manufacturing plants.
WELLNESS
In addition to offering disease management programs for our employees, Southwire focuses much of its medical benefits costs on prevention, rather than treatment. While we help provide care for those who become ill, we also work to keep them from getting sick in the first place.
DIVERSITY
Knowing that a mix of talents provides the best ideas, Southwire places great value on diversity. We continue to build diversity among our total employee base as well as among our company leadership.
POWER FUND The POWER (Providing Others With Emergency Relief) Fund is a non-profit fund that assists employees facing catastrophic events, such as family illnesses, family deaths or natural disasters. Southwire employees contribute to the fund. Those needing assistance can apply for grants. Employees also can raise money for a coworker, with the fund matching the total amount raised. Employee participation in the fund remains around 60 percent.
OUR COMMUNITIES
PROJECT GIFT
Formed from an employee effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, Project GIFT® (Giving Inspiration for Tomorrow) allows employees to help better their communities by sharing their time and talents. The Blackshirts, as the team members have come to be known, volunteer through local beautification efforts, Special Olympics events and other opportunities. Each July, the team conducts a Back-to-School Supply Giveaway in Carrollton, which provides 5,000 local students with bags of free school supplies. Project GIFT volunteers also organize an annual toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots, which provides gifts to needy children at Christmas.
12 FOR LIFE
Southwire’s 12 for Life, a unique partnership with the Carroll County Schools, encourages students who may be considering dropping out of school to rethink that decision. By working in real jobs, making real products and earning real wages, student workers develop job skills and a work ethic that can take them in a number of directions when they graduate.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Southwire continually seeks opportunities to help better the places we call home. Employees are encouraged to take advantage of a community involvement policy that provides time off work to volunteer in community improvement efforts. Southwire was the first to participate in Take 5, a Georgia Department of Corrections program that encourages companies to hire newly paroled felons. We are working on a partnership to provide jobs for the mentally and physically challenged and for disabled veterans. The company provides financial support to local organizations through its corporate giving program as well.
OUR ENVIRONMENT
As we introduce new products and extend our reach in current and new markets, Southwire is experiencing a period of robust growth. That’s a good, healthy place to be.
At the same time, we have become increasingly aware of the effects our products and processes have on the natural world. As we add new facilities to support our increased business activity, we also add the potential for negative impacts on the environment.
To make sure those potential impacts do not become real ones, Southwire operates with a philosophy of growing green. The goal is to actually shrink our environmental footprint as we expand our business.
