Adkins graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering in 1986. In 1992, Adkins completed his M.B.A. with a concentration in finance and international business from the Stern School at New York University.

Adkins is active in the Pricing Society, the American Management Association, and the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and is a mentor in the New Business Venture Program at New York University.
