Southwire Commissions New SCR Rod System in Russia

(Carrollton, Ga. – Oct. 1, 2004) – Southwire Company announced today the commissioning of a new SCR® copper rod system in Russia, at the plant site of ZAO Novgorodsky Metallurgichesky Zavod (NMZ) in Veliky Novgorod.

This is the seventh SCR copper rod system sold for installation in Russia and the Confederation of Independent States. The new SCR 2000 is designed with a production rate of 12 tonnes per hour and is capable of producing 75,000 tonnes of rod per year. ZAO Novgorodsky Metallurgichesky Zavod will join the SCR User’s Group, the world’s largest ETP copper continuous-cast and roll user’s group in the world.

“We are very excited about the addition of NMZ to our user’s group,” said Will Berry president of SCR Technologies. “They will benefit from and add to the knowledge base that works to improve the rod quality and lower the operating cost of SCR copper rod systems.”
The project included the supply of all operating equipment, from the furnace loader to a finished rod handling system. The Southwire SCR team provided the design and equipment for the Southwire shaft furnace system, which consisted of a loader, melter, holder and launder system. The Southwire SCR team also provided the design and equipment for the casting machine, automatic metal pouring system and bar preparation unit.

Morgan Construction Company provided the design and manufacture of the rolling mill, the rod delivery and cleaning system, and the rod coiling system. Southwire and Morgan have worked together for more than 39 years to supply state-of-the-art continuous rod systems to the copper and aluminum industries.  Rockwell Automation provided electrical controls for this system.

Southwire has sold 70 continuous-cast SCR copper rod systems worldwide. The SCR continuous-cast system is the world leader because of  its ease of operation, lowest operating costs and highest operating efficiencies. Rod produced on SCR systems is of the highest quality and meets or exceeds all international standards.

In addition to copper rod mills, Southwire also sells SCR systems to produce EC, electrical alloy, and mechanical alloy aluminum rod. Southwire operates four of its own SCR systems, including a copper SCR system in Carrollton, Ga. and three aluminum SCR systems in Hawesville, Ky. that produce EC, electrical alloy and mechanical alloy aluminum rod.

Southwire is North America’s largest building wire manufacturer and one of the world’s leading wire and cable producers.  The company’s products include copper and aluminum rod, building wire and cable, utility cable products, industrial power cable and flexible power cord. Southwire is the expert on continuous-casting rod systems. Nearly 80 copper and aluminum SCR rod systems have been sold around the world.
