Southwire Completes Acquisition of Essex Electrical Products

Southwire Company has completed its acquisition of the wire and cable assets of Essex Electrical Products, including Essex's plant in Florence, Ala.

Southwire will continue to operate the Florence plant, which manufactures building wire used in residential, commercial and industrial construction.

"Today's announcement is further evidence of Southwire's commitment to making key investments that support our position as the leader in our core wire and cable markets," said Southwire President and CEO Stuart Thorn. "Most importantly, the acquisition of Essex Electrical Products broadens the platform from which we serve our customers, allowing us to more efficiently provide the quality products and services they have come to expect from our company."

With its proximity to Southwire's headquarters and copper rod manufacturing plant in Carrollton, Ga., the Florence plant fits perfectly into the company's manufacturing and distribution network, according to Jack Carlson, president of Southwire's Electrical Division.

"Through several key acquisitions in recent years, Southwire has built a strong geographical base, with manufacturing plants and distribution centers strategically located across the country," Carlson said. "All production from Florence will flow through that system, giving us valuable, added capacity. We expect a smooth transition for our current and future customers."

Since June of 2003, Essex has invested between $14 and $17 million in upgrades and enhancements of the facility, including the installation of new, state-of-the-art equipment along with upgraded machinery and an added 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

"It's one of the most efficient building wire plants in the country," Carlson said. "That will add to the low-cost manufacturing position Southwire already holds. Over the past 55 years, Southwire has established itself as a leader in the wire and cable industry by providing innovative, high-quality products and service. This acquisition builds upon that reputation and allows us to further ensure our customers that when they call with an order, we'll make sure they get what they need - when they need it."
